Cultural Awareness

Ash's fantastic friend.png

Ash is the principal of a School for the Visually Impaired. As she is also visually impaired, she has a guide dog, Pax, to help her out. Today Ash and Pax went to the guide dog training school to meet Pax’s trainer, Charlie, and his sister Molly. Let’s read about two experiences they faced while on the way to the training school.

The story aims to raise children’s awareness of the different types of service dogs and their training, as well as educating them on the “Dos and Don’ts” (e.g. Do enquire, Don’t disturb, Don’t pat) when interacting with a guide dog.

Cantonese Opera – An Old-fashioned Cultural Heritage?

Laura and Martin’s music teacher introduced to them Cantonese opera, part of the intangible cultural heritage of Hong Kong. They were astonished by the breathtaking beauty of the costumes and the profound culture. They went to watch a performance, the Lotus Lantern (寶蓮燈), together with their parents. Martin and Laura were amazed at a little girl’s stunning performance. They fell in love with Cantonese opera.

Cultural Carnival

Our school organised a cultural carnival. Students of different ethnicities wore their traditional clothing and shared their hometown food. There were Pakistani, Indian, Nepalese, Filipino and Hong Kong cultural stalls. We visited each stall and explored different food cultures.

After the New Year holiday, the students went back to school. Five children from different ethnic backgrounds gathered in the canteen. After hearing about Lin’s Lunar New Year holiday, they talked about their own cultural and national festivals, and were excited about celebrating these festivals together in the coming year.
